The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides for three classes of airman medical certificates: First-Class Medical: This medical is for the Airline Transport Pilot, valid 12 months if you are under age 40, and 6 months for pilots age 40 and above. Second-Class Medical: For the Commercial Pilot, valid 12 months. Third-Class Medical: For the Private Pilot, valid 60 months. Please Note: If you're 40 years or older it will be good only 24 months.
Student Pilot Certificate Student pilots get a yellow medical certificate regardless which class of medical they are applying for. This medical also serves as a student pilot certificate that will expire at the end of the 60th month after the month of the date of examination shown on the certificate. The 60 month time span is reduced to 24 months if you are 40 years or older.

Please Note: If you are going to get your medical outside the States, make sure that your application is filled out correctly, especially for students from non-English speaking countries. Some medical aviation examiners may forget to double check the form before they sign and send it off. If this is the case, or if there are any mistakes on the form you will receive a notice from the FAA informing you about the issue. You must reply within 30 days or they will request you to return the medical.
